360 Photographs
I’ve been collecting photographs of the Great Plains for more than a decade altogether and with more focus over the past five years. The result is a project titled West of Here. My goal has always been to publish books - an unfortunately quite expensive endeavor, especially with a project as large as this one. I have been a fairly prolific photographer over the years and find myself sitting on a number of mostly unseen projects and a lot of images that have not been shared. Because of this, I decided to create a West of Here website with a large selection of photographs from the series.

The result is 360 photographs broken down into twelve “chapters” sorted by visual similarities and subject matter. From my childhood, I have always been interested in recording and organizing information. It’s something that comes naturally to me and helps me understand the world around me. So I am embracing this tendency once again. This is a taste of how my memory and thought processes work.

These photographs were taken in every American Great Plains state - from the Missouri River in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west, the Canadian border in the north to the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert in the south. There are landscapes and towns, relics and curiosities, buildings and signage. I hope this captures just how much variety and beauty there is in place that many consider boring.

I am still working on two books that I hope to publish in the next couple of years. The Sunflower Blues and Oglala are both overdue. I have felt a bit listless in regards to photography this year but the time I have spent with the Great Plains photographs has helped inspire me to keep moving forward.
